Using lump breakers in pneumatic conveying
Lisa A. Little, Progressive Products, says:
imagePneumatic conveying is an excellent method of transporting bulk solid materials, but if your material has agglomerations or clumps or if the material's particles are just too big, you may experience flow problems or clogging. Variables such as humidity, material transportation conditions, and material storage time can cause unwanted agglomeration in powders and other bulk solid materials. The resulting clumps may affect the material's ability to flow through a pneumatic conveying system. Materials that are prone to agglomeration can reduce a conveying system's performance and may require … » Continue

Q: How can we be certain the magnets we select meet our contamination mitigation schema?
A: Dennis O'Leary, Industrial Magnetics, says:
imageMagnetic separation equipment is used to structure a plant's program for addressing foreign contamination concerns. Whether it's the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), British Retail Consortium Global Standard (BRCGS), Safe Quality Food (SQF), or some variation thereof, there's an ever-increasing trend in which processing facilities require … » Continue

Understanding your filter's air-to-media ratio for effective dust collection
Randi Huckaby, Camfil APC, says:
imageControlling the dust generated by powder and bulk solids processing and handling is crucial for employee safety, end-product quality, and regulatory compliance. A high-efficiency dust collector designed specifically for your operation will filter hazardous and nuisance fugitive dust to make the indoor environment safer. Consultants and equipment suppliers can help you determine not only the best system for your facility but also the optimal air-to-media ratio, filter media, and filter type for your application.
Selecting a filter with the incorrect air-to-media (sometimes referred to as air-to-cloth) ratio can … » Continue

DHA deadline extended for agricultural, food facilities
OSHA has announced that the deadline for completing a dust hazard analysis (DHA) has been extended to January 1, 2022, for agricultural and food facilities. There are many different approaches for performing a DHA, and the results will identify opportunities for improvement in safeguarding people, equipment, and buildings from dust explosions and fires. NFPA 652: Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust presents general guidelines for a DHA and provides an example. Additional references that describe various techniques and methodologies to conduct a DHA are also available, including webinars, books, and other resources. Agricultural and food facilities may be able to use the DHA checklist provided in Annex F of NFPA 61: Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosions in Agricultural and Food Processing Facilities. OSHA, Washington, DC, is a large regulatory agency of the US Department of Labor with federal visitorial powers to inspect and examine workplaces. To learn more, click here.
