Dust collection: Reducing production downtime and cutting operating costs
Q: Our plant has been experiencing unexpected dust accumulation. What recommendations can you make to help us identify the problem?
imageSometimes, dust collection systems don't work well. Situations I've encountered include systems that don't reduce the airborne dust that personnel are exposed to, and systems that are constant maintenance problems. Even if a dust collection system is properly designed and engineered, problems can still occur because of management decisions, maintenance issues, or technical problems. This column covers how to correct certain dust collection system issues by describing several cases that show what happened to cause problems, and the corrective actions taken to solve those problems. This can help you reduce production downtime, cut operating costs, and, hopefully, do it right the next time.

More Questions & Answers
Q: How can I speed up my blower without reducing my conveying rate?
A: Eric Maynard, Jenike & Johanson, says:
imageWith pneumatic conveying, a common misconception is that a dilute-phase conveying system's capacity can be increased by increasing the airflow rate. The total pressure drop in a system is the sum of the pressure drop incurred from the solids and the air (or other gas) moving through the conveying line and filter. » Continue

phototips for effective agitated vacuum drying
Shawn Hearn, B&P Littleford
Effective drying is often a crucial step in many processing operations. In addition to its obvious importance in developing an attractive and useable product, drying is frequently used to facilitate material handling, reduce shipping costs, increase process equipment capacity, and optimize product preservation during shipment and storage. » Continue
