Tips for continuous fluid-bed dryer design

Q: What advice can you provide for improved continuous fluid-bed dryer design?

imageA fluid-bed dryer in the broadest sense is a vessel that allows intimate contact of heated drying air (or gas) with discrete solid particles moving as a dense phase from feed inlet to product discharge. Heat is transferred to the particles, and moisture is evaporated and carried away by the exiting gas stream as it passes through the bed of solids in a crossflow pattern. In Part I, I discussed fluid-bed dryer types and provided some tips to ensure the best fluid-bed dryer is used for your application. Here are some additional tips to help design your continuous fluid-bed dryer and keep it running smoothly.

More Questions and Answers
Q: How can we grind our material more efficiently and with a smaller particle size standard deviation?

A: Joseph Andersen, CPM Roskamp Champion, says:

We get this question a lot. One of the best ways to get a more efficient grind with a smaller particle size standard deviation is step grinding, which, in the simplest terms, is size reduction accomplished in steps or stages. Step grinding usually incorporates two grinding machines with the primary objective of reducing the cost to produce a ton of finished ground material. Additional benefits can include improved particle size distribution control…

Q: What can we do to reduce wear in our pneumatic conveying system's elbows?

imageA: Ricky Patel, Lorenz Conveying Products, says:

Wear can be a problem in any pneumatic conveying system, especially those conveying abrasive materials, operating at high velocities, or doing both. Wear should be considered when a system is being designed, but it's often overlooked since a fitting designed for long wear may not always be the most efficient. Elbows and fittings should be selected based on…

Feature
photo ways to minimize your new dust collector's operating costs

Tony Supine, Camfil APC

photoCalculate your filters' total cost of operation.
Similar in concept to life-cycle costing, a total cost of operation (TCO) calculation is very useful for deciding which filters to select for your dust collector. A TCO is a step-by-step evaluation process encompassing three categories: energy, consumables, and maintenance and disposal.
