Bühler AG, Uzwil, Switzerland, has been working to build a digitally connected rice mill. The integrated rice mill setup has a connected sorter, whitener, and sensors. The rice mill also will include artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning technology to help reduce waste, save energy, and consistently provide quality products. The first company to use the new mill is Swiss rice miller Riseria Taverne SA, which is testing Bühler’s equipment. Rice processors face the challenge of managing huge variations in input with fewer skilled operators. The rice mill’s sensors keep track of essential parameters that include shine, smoothness, whiteness, and percentage of broken rice grains using complex machine-learning algorithms.

Bühler supplies various processing technology and equipment. It specializes in grains and food solutions, consumer foods solutions, and advanced materials for vehicles and buildings. (5/21)
