Ask an Expert
Balancing your dust collection system's airflow

Q: Our manufacturing process results in combustible dust. We have a good dust collection system, but we’re concerned about meeting OSHA requirements for balancing the dust collection system. What's the best method to do this?

Regardless of what you may hear on the street, the right amount of airflow doesn’t find its way through the dust collection system’s ductwork without your help. You must balance the airflow through all the branch ducts to maintain the design airflows through the system’s dust capture hoods.

Feature
Sizing your horizontal batch mixer

Carl G. Ewing, S. Howes

In batch mixing, ingredients are loaded into the mixer, the mixer is operated, and the mixture is unloaded so another batch can be loaded into the vessel. This operation is quite different than continuous mixing: In a continuous mixer, ingredients flow steadily from upstream processing into the operating mixer and are retained and mixed for a specified time, and the mixture discharges steadily from the mixer at the same flowrate. Because of this operating difference, a batch mixer is often used for mixing smaller quantities of material, handling multiple ingredients or multiple product formulas, and providing longer mixing times, such as to blend difficult-to-mix ingredients.

photoOf the several machines that provide batch mixing, a horizontal batch mixer is one of the most popular in bulk solids plants. Two common types are ribbon and paddle mixers. Each consists of a stationary U-shaped trough (or tank) equipped with a rotating agitator shaft. The shaft in a ribbon mixer, as shown in Figure 1, is fitted with metal spokes (or cross arms) and helical blades called ribbons; in a paddle mixer the shaft is fitted with paddle-shaped blades. As the shaft rotates, the ribbons or paddles move and agitate the material to create a mixing action. In a variation of this equipment, called a plow mixer, the rotating agitator shaft has plow-shaped blades and the housing can be cylindrical rather than U-shaped.

Size
Determining the optimal size for your batch mixer is based on the working volume, fill level, and the residence time your mixing process requires.

Choosing the right high-performance steel bulk storage tank

Bill Neighbors, Tank Connection

photoA steel storage tank is one component of a larger bulk storage system that not only contains your material but provides reliable discharge to your process system. Choosing the right bulk storage tank for your application requires knowing your stored material's flow characteristics, what fill and discharge systems will be used, what protective interior and exterior coatings are required, and several other specific application details.

No matter what your application requirements, you need to choose a high-performance tank with high-quality construction and coatings to ensure that the tank provides a long service life with low maintenance requirements. Unless your stored material has a light bulk density, you also need to select a robust tank design that can withstand the rigors of continuous processing requirements.

For detailed information on choosing a bulk storage tank you can read “High-performance steel bulk storage tanks: Construction types, capacities, and benefits” by Bill Neighbors, Tank Connection, in the November issue of Powder and Bulk Engineering.

Self-healing polymer created in Spain

Scientists at the IK4 Center for Electrochemical Technologies (IK4-CIDETEC) have created the first self-healing polymer that can repair itself without any intervention. The material is composed of a poly elastomeric matrix — a network of complex molecular interactions that will spontaneously cross-link to heal any break. The polymer displays Velcro-like behavior with a 97 percent healing efficiency within 2 hours. Research on this polymer has been published in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Materials Horizon. IK4-CIDETEC, San Sebastian, Spain, is a scientific facility focused on materials, surfaces, and energy research. To learn more and to view a video about this polymer, click here.

ISA calls for papers on fugitive emissions

The International Society of Automation's (ISA's) 14th Annual Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR)–Fugitive Emissions Symposium has issued a call for papers inviting experts, innovators, thought leaders, and other professionals in the air compliance field to submit abstracts for presentation consideration for the conference to be held on May 19-21 at the Astor Crowne Plaza in New Orleans. The deadline for submission is January 15. ISA, Research Triangle Park, N.C., is a nonprofit organization supporting 30,000 members and professionals in the automation industry. Clean-energy research center dedicated

The Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Golden, Colo., was dedicated in September by energy secretary Ernest Moniz as the nation's first major research facility focused on clean-energy grid integration and wide-scale deployment. ESIF will help manufacturers, utilities, and public and private sector researchers integrate clean energy and energy-efficient technologies. NREL is the US Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy-efficiency research and development. To learn more, click here.
