Ask an Expert
Dust and combustibility

Q: Do all dust collectors handling combustible dusts require isolation? Why or why not?

The answer to this question is yes, unless a propagated explosion won't do any harm or cause any great risk. However, this situation is rarely found in the industry.

Some basics:
In general, a dust collector containing a potentially explosive air (or gas) and dust mixture should be protected by pressure-reducing techniques based on venting the explosion overpressure or suppressing the explosion. Both techniques will reduce the maximum explosive pressure in the collector to a level that can be handled efficiently.

Feature
Pin Mill Basics

Steve Coulombe, Sturtevant Inc.

photoA pin mill reduces dry bulk materials to medium fineness by impact — that is, by hitting or striking particles with high energy to break them. The mill can accept feed materials with a particle size from 20 microns to 0.5 inch and a Mohs hardness up to about 4, reducing them to particles as small as 10 microns, depending on the mill type and feed size. This versatile machine handles a wide range of materials; some typical examples are hydrated lime, sugar, wet corn slurry, food ingredients, and fertilizers.

Read It Here First:
Case history: Palletizer helps improve company's productivity

photoBay State Milling, Quincy, Mass., produces high-quality flour and grain products for retail and wholesale bakeries, food service operators, and food distributors and manufacturers. The company operates a milling plant in Clifton, N.J., that produces a range of flour products packaged in 25-, 50-, and 100-pound bags. The company recently upgraded the Clifton plant’s bagging line to increase production by nearly 30 percent, replacing two old lines with one more efficient one. As part of the project, the company needed to find palletizing and pallet-securing equipment capable of keeping up with the production increase.

Upgrading the bagging and palletizing line

According to Clifton plant manager Mike Carlson, who served as plant superintendent during the upgrade project, the company needed a palletizing platform that was highly reliable and more adaptable than the previous one. “We wanted a better-quality pallet stack and a palletizing system with high uptimes and minimal maintenance requirements,” he says. “The palletizing system also had to be able to keep up with the increased bagging rate.”

Initially, the company considered installing a robotic palletizer and a stretch-wrapping system, because of past experience it had with palletizing equipment at other plants. However, because of concerns about introducing and supporting robotics in the plant, the company decided to look for a different type of palletizer.

To learn how the company chose its palletizer you can read “Automated palletizer rapidly efficiently stacks filled flour bags” by BEUMER, in the May issue of Powder and Bulk Engineering.
