Agglomeration Advisor: Scaling up wet high-shear mixer granulation
In this column, the author discusses the challenges in scaling up wet high-shear mixer granulation.
Wet high-shear mixer granulation is a particle size enlargement process used in many industries, particularly pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing, and fertilizer production. While high-shear granulation is very commonly used to produce granules, it’s notoriously difficult to design and scale up, whether it be scaling up from a lab- or pilot-size machine to a production machine or from an existing production machine to one with a larger capacity, mainly because of the many operating parameters and competing mechanisms occurring in the granulator.
