Feeders: Don’t Overlook the Basics, 11/09

CD of live Broadcast 11/10/2009

Feeders are used to control the rate of bulk material discharge from a bin into a process. Unfortunately, many engineers designing powder handling processes have not had proper training on correct selection and implementation of feeders.Without proper training for feeder selection, costly problems such as erratic discharge, flooding, particle damage, or abrasive wear result. The content covered in this webinar will help a participant to understand the fundamental principles involved in selecting an effective bulk solids feeder. Special feeding applications, like micro-feeding, will be presented. The techniques have been proven across all industries and are based on a scientific approach that can solve existing problems or prevent problems from developing with a new process requiring a robust feeder. Important points to be covered in this Webinar:
• Feeder vs. conveyor
• Define process requirements and the operating environment
• Know your bulk material
• Basic features of common feeders (screws, belts, rotary valves, vibratory)
• Proper interface between a feeder and a hopper

Presenter: Eric Maynard, Eric is a Senior Consultant with Jenike & Johanson. Eric received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. As an engineer at Jenike & Johanson, he has designed handling systems for bulk solids including cement, coal, limestone, plastic powder, food products, and pharmaceuticals. He is the cement industry specialist at Jenike & Johanson. He frequently lectures on the storage and flow of bulk solids for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), individual companies, in-house courses, and numerous conferences (e.g., Powder & Bulk Engineering Conference, Powder & Bulk Solids Conference).

Moderator: Robert Harkin, Associate Editor of Powder and Bulk Engineering
