The case for measuring bulk solids inventories by weight

Accurately measuring how much material is in a vessel is key both to controlling material flow through the process and monitoring inventory levels. This article explains how using weight-based inventory measurement can be the answer for vessels mounted on a steel support structure.

Major bulk solids storage and surge vessels in a plant are commonly equipped with some type of inventory measurement system. Regardless of the system type, the system generally calculates and expresses the quantity of material stored in the vessel in units of weight. Most inventory measurement systems monitor material in a vessel by one of two approaches:

  • Continuous level measurement: Finding the material's top surface in the vessel with a level-measuring device and calculating the material's weight based on this level reading.
  • Weighing: Directly weighing the material using a sensor attached to or placed under the vessel supports.
