Storing and handling bulk bags with portable storage racks
Despite the advantages bulk bags provide -- including large capacity [as much as 160 times that of smaller bags] and reusability -- filled bulk bags present a number of storing and handling problems. This article describes how loading filled bulk bags on portable storage racks can solve these problems. Sections provide basic information about portable storage racks, discuss how a portable storage rack can solve storing and handling problems, and explain how to select a portable storage rack.
As popular as bulk bags are for storing dry bulk solids, a filled bulk bag's weight -- up to 4,000 pounds in some cases -- can make it hard to handle. A filled bag is also hard to stack directly on another; as a result, the bag doesn't use vertical storage space very well, especially in warehouses with high ceilings. Although placing a filled bag on a pallet before stacking the bag on another sometimes helps, even then the bags can usually be stacked only two high.
