Silo refines sugar manufacturer's storage capacity

To eliminate additional costs incurred by storing sugar off-site, a manufacturer contracted to have a silo built.

Michigan Sugar's Croswell, Mich., plant manufactures refined sugar from beets. The plant, about 60 miles northwest of Detroit, annually receives truckloads of raw materials that include about 500,000 tons of beets, 25,000 tons of limestone, 15,000 tons of coal, and 2,500 tons of coke. The raw materials are moved to storage by either cranes or front-end loaders. A water-filled flume hydraulically conveys the beets to the plant.
