Introducing a new batch control standard: A tool for helping you design batch controls

To avoid inefficiency and production stoppages during batching as well as to prevent customer complaints about your batch product, you need to accurately control your batch process. A new standard developed by the Instrument Society of America's Standards and Practices Committee 88 can help you design batch controls for maximum batching efficiency. To give you an idea of how the standard is structured and how you can apply it, this article describes some of the standard's models and briefly summarizes other relevant information.

The Instrument Society of America's Standards and Practices Committee 88 [SP-88] is developing a standard for writing batch control programs. The standard is intended for people who design or operate batch processing plants, those who specify controls and associated application programs for such plants, and those who design and market batch control soft- ware and hardware. [Editor's note: For basic information on how a batching system works and is applied, see Dave Ness's article, "Batch weighing today," on pages 12-14 in the March 1987 issue of Powder and Bulk Engineering.]
