Dust Collection: Combustible Dusts – Safe Cleanup Methods, 2/12

CD of live broadcast 2/7/12

Accumulations of fugitive combustible dusts in the workplace could become a fuel source for a catastrophic dust explosion if suspended and ignited. Cleanup operations, if not done safely, can create dust explosion conditions during the very act intended to reduce risk in the workplace. There are several precautions to be taken to prevent a dust explosion during cleaning operations. This webinar will describe how to assess the magnitude of the dust layer hazard, list the hazards from cleaning operations, explain the considerations for hiring a contractor for major cleanup, and review the design principles for successful vacuum cleaning systems, the preferred method in NFPA standards.

It will also provide an update on recent changes in NFPA standards (484, 654, 664) related to cleanup.

Presenter: Gary Johnson. Before becoming a consultant for Workplace Exposure Solutions, Gary worked in health, safety, and environment at Procter & Gamble for 27 years. His focus areas were dust control and central vacuum cleaning system design and maintenance, process safety around flammable vapors and combustible dusts, and environmental emissions and discharges. As a consultant over the last 9+ years, he has helped clients in consumer products, pharmaceuticals, plastics, paint and coatings, foods, flavorings, wood processing, specialty chemical, and metal forming industries.

Moderator: Robert Harkin, Associate Editor of Powder and Bulk Engineering
