Particle Professor: Pressure's role in fluidized-bed performance

Columnist Ray Cocco discusses pressure's role in fluidized-bed performance.

For many bulk solids fluidized-bed processes, the first step in ensuring reliable performance is to understand how the pressure varies throughout the system. Gravity is usually the pump that moves fluidized particles — unlike a gas or, to a lesser extent, a liquid — from one point to another. It's the resulting pressure change from this gravity pump across the system that ensures that the particles will actually move from point to point — exactly the way pressure changes facilitate gas or liquid flow.
