Using a roller press to compact your low-moisture by-products for recycling — Part II

Waste by-products from manufacturing plants, coal-burning power plants, and other operations can create bulky, costly, or even hazardous disposal problems. Agglomeration equipment can treat these by-products so they can be recycled — either by sending them back to your process or using them to make new products. This two-part article concentrates on using one type of high-pressure agglomeration equipment, the roller press, to help you recycle low-moisture waste by-products by compacting them into various high-density shapes. Part I appeared in the February issue; Part II concludes the article.

Several metal manufacturing processes use fine by-products from other metal manufacturing plants as high-value raw materials. They include brass powder and turnings, chrome ore, coke and petrol coke, electrode compounds, copper concentrate, foundry dust, iron oxide, lead oxide, molybdenum oxide, nickel ore, nickel powder, and tin concentrate. Many of these metallic fines are lightweight and too difficult to handle as fines, or they gain value when agglomerated. Almost all of these metallic fines can be compacted, either with or without a binder, in a series of steps, as shown in Figure 1.
