Bin design: A summary report
Virtually every variable in bin design holds potential veto power over whether the entire system will work. For example, the bin's geometry, the material's physical properties, and the device into which the material flows all play a determining role. Even time and environmental variables can create problems.
Material flow headaches can be avoided, however. Many material handling experts agree that a majority of storage and flow problems are caused when compromise and lack of knowledge dominate bin design. This article summarizes some basic considerations in bin design and provides a foundation upon which to build the specialized knowledge you'll need to guarantee "material" success.
