Bin activators improve lime flow
A water treatment plant installs a new batch lime-slaking system that uses bin activators to discharge lime from storage silos.
The Aurora Water Treatment Plant, Aurora, Ill., converts
ground and surface water into potable drinking water for Aurora residents. In the past, the plant used a continuous lime-slaking system in one part of the water-purification
process. However, the system operated inefficiently and caused high maintenance costs, so in 1999 the plant worked with an engineering firm and a systems supplier to design and install a new batch lime-slaking system. Since one problem with the old system was inconsistent lime discharge from storage silos, the engineering firm specified that a bin activator be installed on the bottom of
each silo.
