Agglomeration Advisor: Quick answers to common agglomeration questions

In this month's column, I'll answer some common questions about selecting an agglomeration method and equipment.

Q: I need to add a binder to my material during pellet forming. I'm using drums and discs for pelletizing, and a screw conveyor handles the material before pelletizing. Can I add the binder in the conveyor to save the additional cost of a mixer?

A: Yes, a screw feeder or conveyor can provide sufficient mixing and tumbling action to disperse a liquid or powder binder into your base material, but a high- or medium-shear intensive premixer usually provides better mixing. For example, using a pin mixer can save money - such efficient mixing often reduces overall binder content by 0.5 to 1.0 percent. The pin mixer [or another mixer] can also start the pelletizing process, making subsequent drum or pan pelletizing more efficient and sometimes even increasing the throughput rate.
