Merck & Company operates a multifunctional pharmaceutical and biological research and manufacturing site in West Point, Pa., which receives thousands of raw materials. The site receives about 150 active ingredients [or bulk drug substances], of which 99 percent are dry bulk products. Examples are lovastatin [an active ingredient that lowers cholesterol] and hydrochlorothiazide [an active ingredient that acts as a diuretic and antihypertensive].
