Agglomeration Advisor: Size reduction and size enlargement

This issue's focus topic is size reduction. You may ask: What, if anything, do these two seemingly opposite technologies -- size enlargement (agglomeration) and size reduction -- have in common?

First, in dry fine grinding, agglomeration causes what has often been called the limit of grinding. For each solid, a fineness exists at which the size of the finest particles in the charge doesn't seem to become smaller in spite of continued energy input and consumption. (Among other consequences, this phenomenon prohibits the manufacture of individual nano-sized particles by top-down, dry fine grinding methods.)
