Troubleshooting your high-intensity mixer

Is your high-intensity mixer vibrating, thumping, or leaking? Or are your mixtures falling short of your process requirements? The key to spotting and diagnosing mixer problems is to understand how the machine works and what can go wrong. After describing the high-intensity mixer's components and operation and what you need to know about your mixer and process conditions, the author tells you how to troubleshoot the mixer and how to implement preventive maintenance.

A high-intensity mixer's ability to quickly produce homogeneous mixtures of dry powders or pellets makes it useful in several batch mixing applications. The mixer provides distributive mixing [homogeneously distributing all minor ingredients in all major ingredients] and dispersive mixing [breaking up or dispersing agglomerates] of rigid polyvinyl chloride, colors and pigments, toners, polycarbonates, powder coatings, ceramics, and master batches for several products. The unit also washes recycled thermoplastics, agglomerates pharmaceuticals and plastics, coats fillers, and disperses and coats engineered resins. Other applications include incorporating and heating high- density polyethylene wire and cable formulations and incorporating Teflon into battery slurries.
