What you should know to select a conveyor belt precleaner

Removing material carryback from your conveyor belt with a belt cleaner will not only reduce spillage cleanup casts but will keep the belt from drifting off-track and prevent uneven wear on pulley bearings and damage to return idlers. This article discusses how to select a precleaner, the most common belt cleaner. Sections cover choosing the blade material, installing the precleaner to ensure consistent blade pressure, and getting help from the supplier.

A conveyor belt precleaner consists of a steel bar or tube, called a mainframe, that extends across the belt. A blade [or set of narrow blade segments] is fixed on the mainframe. The precleaner mounts forward on the conveyor head pulley's face, just below the trajectory of the material unloading from the belt, as shown in Figure 1. The head pulley provides a firm base for the precleaner blade's scraping action. The precleaner can be used alone or with one [or more] secondary belt cleaner, which typically mounts on the belt's return side at the head pulley.
