Feeders: Important Design Considerations for Handling Fine Powder, 5/09

CD of live broadcast 5/12/09

Fine powders are prevalent in most handling operations in the pharmaceutical, foods, and chemical industries. Fine materials can experience additional handling problems above and beyond traditional flow issues such as arching and ratholing. Fine powder feeding challenges include flooding (uncontrolled flow) and rate limitations, both of which result from gas pressure gradients within the fine powder, and can exacerbate feed problems. Dr. Carson will explain why these flow problems occur and what technology can be used to ensure consistent, reliable feed of find powders.

  • Fine powder definition and examples
  • Common feed problems with fine powders
  • No flow or erratic flow
  • Spillage and dusting
  • Rate limitation
  • Segregation
  • Air-assisted feeding
  • Feeders used for fluidized powder handling
  • Feeding fine powders with screws, belts, rotary valves

Presenter: Dr. John Carson, PhD, President of Jenike & Johanson, Inc

Moderator: Robert Harkin, Associate Editor of Powder and Bulk Engineering
