Unitizing system stabilizes pallets of fertilizer bags
When slippery bags of fertilizer fell from pallets during transit, WGM/Hydro used a system that applied a stabilizing compound to bags to unitize the pallets.
Since 1946, WGM/Hydro, based in South San Francisco, Calif., has imported and marketed several types of synthetic fertilizer -- mainly calcium nitrate -- produced in Europe, Canada, and the Middle East. WGM/Hydro receives the imported bulk fertilizer from its parent company, Norsk Hydro of Oslo, Norway, and others, then packages, distributes, and markets the fertilizer, shipping it from eight terminals. The terminals are located in San Diego, Stockton, and Sacramento, Calif.; Vancouver, Wash.; Charleston, S. C.; Tampa, Fla.; Wilmington, N. C.; and Toledo, Ohio. The fertilizer is sold to dealers and distributors who sell to end users, usually commercial growers and nurseries.
