An introduction to gravity separators
A gravity separator separates dry, granular, free-flowing material according to particle density. The unit is typically used to improve product quality in seed and grain, mineral, and recycling applications. This article fist describes how a gravity separator works, then explains how to determine if your material is suitable for gravity separation. The final sections describe how to select a gravity separator and how to calculate the equipment's return on investment.
If your material contains impurities or damaged or off-spec particles, you may be able to improve the material's quality by running the material through a gravity separator, sometimes called an air table. The gravity separator grades the material by density, thus separating light from heavy particles.
