Gas velocity changes at different points in a pneumatic conveying system, and when we talk about pneumatic conveying, we use different terms for velocities. So when designing a conveying system, it’s critical to understand what these velocity terms mean.

In an ideal world, a material handling system has properly In a pneumatic conveying system, velocity changes because the conveying gas (such as air or nitrogen) is really a compressible fluid whose volume constantly changes with pressure and temperature changes. As the gas volume changes, the velocity changes too.

To design a pneumatic conveying system, we need to know how to calculate the actual gas volume under different pressure and temperature conditions. We can then use the measurement of actual cubic feet per minute (acfm) for calculating various velocities at a given pressure and temperature.
