Solids segregation: Causes and solutions

Particle segregation is a common problem in solids handling and storage systems. This article identifies and illustrates five of the most prevalent segregation mechanisms and discusses small-scale tests designed to quantify segregation potential. Practical suggestions for reducing segregation in various systems are provided.

Particle segregation renders solids mixtures out of specification and creates inconsistencies among batches. When not resolved, segregation can ruin the taste of powdered soft drink mixes, foul up gas flow in chemical reactors, cause dosage variations in pharmaceuticals, and create significant weight variations in consumer packages.
