Alumina ceramic: A material for reducing equipment wear

This article discusses alumina ceramic, an alumina- based ceramic material that's used as a wear- resistant liner in equipment that handles abrasives. General information about wear and wear-resistant materials is given, and the qualities of alumina ceramic are compared to those of other wear- resistant materials. Design factors to consider when using alumina ceramic for lining handling equipment are also discussed.

Wear affects almost all solid materials. In material handling applications, wear progressively removes material from solid surfaces by relative motion between contacting surfaces or by particle-laden flow streams, as in pneumatic conveying. While wear can shorten the life of almost anything, its effects on handling equipment -- particularly equipment that handles abrasives -- are even more dramatic.
