Pneumatic Conveying: Writing a Request for Quotation for a Pneumatic Conveying System, 1/12

An end user can take one of two approaches when developing a request for quote (RFQ) for a pneumatic conveying system or a group of major components:

1. Write a "Performance Specification," which basically describes the functionality of what the new system or components are to do, leaving the details of the design and component selection to the vendors.

2. Or, for the more knowledgeable end user, write a more "Detailed Equipment Specification," spending significantly more time and effort describing in much more detail the specifics of what’s needed and asking the vendor to quote for the specific request rather than for a typical, standard vendor recommendation.

Each approach has advantages as well as some disadvantages, and which you use greatly depends on the nature of the project and your time and detailed interest in it. Both approaches are acceptable and require a MINIMUM amount of information that must be included to make the request meaningful and to assist BOTH the writer and the vendor in completing the RFQ and proposal task and ultimately moving forward with the equipment procurement.
