The most widely used equipment for collecting small particles from an airstream at high efficiency is the fabric filter dust collector. The collector can use tubular bag filters, which have been around for many decades, or pleated cartridge filters, which came on the scene in the 1970s. Cartridge collectors provide more filter surface area in less space and their filters are available in more media types for difficult applications, with the result that cartridge collectors have been replacing bag filter collectors at a rapid rate. In fact, in the chemical process industries, it's estimated that about two-thirds of all new dust collectors are cartridge collectors.
