A chemical manufacturing plant installs a bulk solids heat exchanger in its process, speeding material cooling and improving efficiency.

Astaris, a joint venture of FMC Corp. and Solutia Inc., manufactures chemical products from phosphorus and phosphate and packages them in bags for detergent, latex paint, and other applications at its plant in Carteret, N.J. One important process step -- cooling material to a temperature low enough for packaging -- was proving to be a challenge for one of the products. The cooling method was slow, labor intensive, and costly.
