Screening for success
A cheese and specialty products producer installs a new low-profile screener in its protein powder processing line, decreasing maintenance costs and increasing production capacities.
Brewster Dairy, Brewster, Ohio, produces cheeses, as well as specialty products that can be used as milk-replacers in various foods. The company's whey processing division makes the specialty products by converting whey [a liquid by-product from the cheese production process] into lactose powder and protein powder. One step in the protein powder production process -- screening oversized particles from the dry protein powder -- was proving to be a challenge for the company. The company's screener was constantly breaking down, causing unacceptable maintenance costs, excessive downtime, and decreased production capacities. The screener also leaked powder to the work area, creating a constant mess that the production personnel had to continuously clean up. But all of this changed when Brewster Dairy discovered a low-profile screener that could decrease costs and increase capacities.
