Not for the birds! Aeromechanical conveyor keeps squirrel-repelling pepper where it belongs
A feed manufacturer installs an aeromechanical conveyor to move a potentially irritating ingredient while keeping it contained.
Cardinals, blue jays, yellowthroated warblers -- bird feeders can attract more than run-of-the-mill house finches or sparrows, but when those pesky squirrels start nosing around, they not only steal the feed, they can steal an avid bird watcher's prized viewing. For more than 80 years, Buckeye Feed Mills, Dalton, Ohio, has manufactured animal feeds, including horse feed, dog and cat food, rabbit and guinea pig pellets, wild and caged bird feed, and exotic feeds. The company's most recently developed product, Squirrel-Free Bird Feed, adds chili pepper to the mix to keep the squirrels away. When Buckeye installed a new line to produce the product, containing the extremely hot pepper was the company's primary design concern.
