Agglomeration Advisor: Drying green agglomerates

The famous Muppet, Kermit the Frog, sings, "It's not easy being green." If green agglomerates could sing, they might say the same thing, since they aren't "finished" until they've been cured by a post-treatment process, most commonly drying. In this month's column, I answer some typical questions I receive about drying green agglomerates. [Editor's note: For more information about drying and dryers, see "Drying" in the "Index to articles" in the December 2001 issue and on PBE's Web site www. powderbulk.com.]

Q: What type of dryer should I use for drying green agglomerates? A: Selecting the "best" drying method often involves a compromise among several factors, including cost, size, heat efficiency, agglomerate movement in the dryer, and the green agglomerate's type, shape, and size.
