Answers to 10 common questions about vertical form-fill-seal bagging

Dusting during bag filling, leaking bags, and high labor costs are just a few of the problems that can affect a conventional powder bagging operation. Vertical form-fill-seal bagging equipment can eliminate these problems and provide other improvements in bagging efficiency and bag performance. In this article, a packaging consultant answers some commonly asked questions about vertical form-fill-seal bagging.

Q: How does a vertical form-fill-seal bagging machine work? A: A vertical form-fill-seal bagging machine is shown in Figure 1. It includes a roll of flat-sheet [typically plastic-based] bagging material, guiding rollers, a forming collar, a forming mandrel [or tube], a fill tube enclosing a vertical feed auger, side-driving belts, a back sealer, sealing jaws, an articulated cutting knife, and a belt conveyor [not shown in the figure]. In most applications, a small dust collector is installed above the bagging machine to remove dust-laden air.
