Pleated filters: Rescuing your overburdened baghouse

Modifying a dust collection system from its original design to handle additional dust pickup points or a process change can lead to a host of problems, including poor filter media and system performance. One cost-effective way to rescue an overburdened pulse-jet baghouse system is to switch from traditional bag filters to pleated filters. This article first explains how performance problems caused by system changes can escalate, then details how replacing your bag filters with filter elements that have pleated media can upgrade your system to handle the changes.

A pulse-jet baghouse dust collection system that's properly designed for an application includes equipment, controls, and filter media to effectively collect the dust without excessive operating or maintenance costs. In many plants, such a system is modified after a few years to handle additional dust pickup points or a process change. Because the baghouse may have been marginally sized to handle the original application, the changes don’t have to be major to have big effects on the system's operation. The common result is an overburdened baghouse system with major filtration and system performance problems and high operating and maintenance costs. A cost-effective way to solve these problems without rebuilding the whole system is to replace the traditional bag filters with pleated filters.
